Harvey Lillard

First Chiropractic Patient

  • Harvey Lillard 1895
  • Had been mostly deaf for 17 years after an accident, and gone to many doctors and underwent several treatments that never worked
  • Dr. D.D. Palmer took an interest in his case and found a lump along his spine
  • Dr. Palmer then "adjusted" the spine
  • After 2 adjustments Harvey Lillard had complete hearing back!

Chiropractic History

  • Dr. Clarence Gonstead
  • Created Gonstead Technique
  • Would see 300-400 patients a day
  • Built a hotel and airstrip for out of towners and other D.C.s who wanted to learn from him next to his office
  • The Gonstead technique became a part of the Palmer Chiropractic College curriculum in 1961, becoming the cornerstone of the schools technique department which other schools followed suit and added the technique to their curriculum
  • Today the Gonstead Technique is the most represented technique on the Chiropractic
    National Boards

Gonstead Technique

  • Foundation of basic biomechanical principle of physics
  • Fundamentally important to determine a subluxation and misaligned vertebrae
  • Cervical chair

"Find the subluxation, accept it where you find it, correct it, and leave it alone." -Dr. Clarence Gonstead

What is Chiropractic?

  • Healthcare focusing on removing disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system
  • Drug free and "hands-on"
  • Uses the Chiropractic adjustment to remove vertebral subluxation complex

What is a subluxation?

A subluxation is a misalignment of the vertebrae that results in nervous system interference.

subluxation

Vertebral Subluxation Complex

  • Joint doesn't move well or is fixated
  • Often times painful but not always
  • Alters the signal that is being sent to and from the brain
  • Can be acute or chronic
  • Removed through Chiropractic adjustments

What does a subluxation cause?

  • Decreases immunity
  • Decreases neural function
  • Compresses and irritates nerves
  • Lowers reflexes
  • Increases stress on the body
  • Pain
Vertebral Subluxation Complex

The Chiropractic Adjustment

  • A Chiropractic adjustment is performed to correct/reduce a subluxation
  • Adjustments restore normal joint function by applying a controlled force to the area of subluxation therefore allowing proper healing and pain relief to occur
  • Adjustments are specific and done by hand to allow for control and "touch"
  • Minimal force is utilized

What does an Adjustment do?

  • Remove stress from joints
  • Remove compression of nervous system
  • Decrease inflammation
  • Lessens the strain on bones, muscles, discs, and ligaments
  • Improve Posture through stimulation of mechanoreceptors

What's that cracking/popping noise?

  • Audibles or "cavitations" are the noises you may hear when you get adjusted.
  • Joints are two bones that are very close together with a sealed capsule in between, those bones contain a small amount of liquid called synovial fluid. So when you are adjusted the bones movement cause the pressure in the capsule to decrease which causes gas bubbles and that is what you are hearing the "pop" noise.

Whiplash

Whiplash

  • Acute sprain/strain injury to the neck
  • Most commonly caused by car accidents
  • If left untreated can lead to worse conditions
  • Whiplash can be treated and symptoms can be greatly reduced by Chiropractic care
  • Low impact rear end collisions result in the lower neck degenerating 6x faster than normal aging process

HERNIATED DISC

Herniated Disc

  • In between the vertebrae are spongy discs that absorb shock for the spine and keep it flexible, if these discs are damaged then they may bulge, tear, or break open which is then
    termed a herniated disc
  • Can happen in any part of your spine
  • Caused by:
Wear and tear from poor mechanics
    Injury
  • Symptoms:
    Pain
    Numbness
    Weakness
    Tingling

Disc Degeneration

  • The intervertebral disc flattens and begins to break down over time causing a loss of height, disc bulging, and pain.
  • Caused by:
    Injury?s
    Sports
    Vertebral Subluxations
  • Cannot be reversed but Chiropractic care can prevent further degeneration and injury to occur.
